5 Digital Marketing Mistakes Killing Kilifi County Businesses

March 20, 20251 min read

After auditing dozens of local businesses, these are the most common — and most costly — digital mistakes I see. Are you making any of them?

I run a free digital audit with almost every prospective client, and the same five mistakes show up again and again — across hotels, restaurants, shops, and NGOs alike. None of them are exotic. All of them are expensive.

The five mistakes

  • Posting without a goal — content goes out because 'we should post something today,' not because it moves a specific customer toward a booking or enquiry.
  • No way to actually capture a lead — a beautiful Instagram page with no bio link, no WhatsApp button, and no clear next step for an interested follower.
  • Treating the website as a brochure — built once, three years ago, never updated, and not built to convert a visitor into an enquiry.
  • Ignoring Google Business Profile — the single highest-leverage free tool available to a local business, left half-finished or completely unclaimed.
  • No tracking — spending money or time on marketing with zero visibility into whether it's actually producing enquiries or bookings.

What ties all five together

Every one of these is a symptom of the same root cause: activity without a system. Posting, boosting, building a website — these are all tactics. Without a structure connecting them to an actual conversion goal, they're just motion. The businesses that fix this don't necessarily do more marketing. They do the same amount, pointed at an actual outcome.
